There have been rumors about the upcoming PS5 Pro, a step up version of the existing PS5 version for a while. PS5 paved the way for the next gen gaming with its upgrades such as ray tracing, enabling better graphics and taking the console gaming on par with pc.
Even though PS5 was released in 2020, it has been dominating the console gaming scene and the rumor of PS5 Pro coming has only reinvigorated it. The newer and better version will undoubtedly have far more capabilities and features. Let’s delve into it so we can see the improvements.
CPU
PS5 Pro will have the same CPU as the current PS5. The current PS5 runs on a AMD Zen 2 CPU which has eight cores and runs at 3.5GHz.Â
It is rumored that the Pro version will have the same AMD CPU. But the Pro version will have an added boost to it called the Boost Mode it will amp up the running speed up to 3.85GHz. As a result it will front some extra performance when needed. Besides that the Pro version will have advanced memory with the CPU to load the system faster, combining with GPU.
GPU
The biggest change in the Pro version is noticeable in the GPU as the latest version will sport an architecture overhaul replacing the older version with better performance.
The Pro version will have RDNA 3 architecture which is a custom AMD GPU. It is an upgrade from the current RDNA 2 architecture present in the PS5.
The RDNA 3 architecture will enable 67 teraflops for 16 bit float calculation. As for single computing it is equivalent to 33.5 teraflops. But the current version only is capable of 10.2 teraflops. So it is a massive jump in performance, almost more than 3 times the power.
Current PS5 version runs games in performance and resolution mode. These two modes allow games to run at 60 fps as well as at high resolution, 4k at the expense of fps pegged to 30 fps.
The GPU is equivalent to the Nvidia RTX 3060 or AMD RX 5700XT. But the Pro version will feature a better GPU with better ray tracing capabilities which will be nearly three times better than the current version. It will also outperform the current version with PSSR even further.
RAM
The Pro version will have slightly higher ram than the current one. PS5 currently has 16 GB GDDR6 SDRAM but the Pro version will have 2 GB more added to it, making it 18 GB.
Storage
There is no noticeable change in the storage. The Pro version will feature the same as the current gen PS5 as it will have a 825 GB SSd with 12 channel interface running at 5.5 GB/s.
Supports Higher Resolution
The newer GPU will enable the Pro version to handle higher resolution, even thought to be enabling the GPU to handle games running at 8k with 60 fps. Even though it’s not confirmed but with the aforementioned performance upgrade, it is hoped that the Pro version will deliver the coveted 8k and run games on better fps with PSSR technology.
The current gen is able to handle 4k but at the sacrifice of fps, only running at 30 fps. It can run at 60 fps on 1440p and 1080p.
PSSR Upscaling Technology
The Playstation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling technology will enable the upcoming Pro version to deliver high performance even at 8k. It is speculated to deliver 120 Hz at 4k and 60 Hz at 8k which is an unprecedented leap in the visual sector by Sony. If they are able to pull it off, the console will dominate the gaming scene with its superior technological edge. The way they will pull this off is by downsampling the visuals then upscaling the image as well as replacing antialiasing solutions.
Especially Enhanced Gaming Titles
The Pro version also promises specially optimized games for its new release. As a result the games will run with better performance on a superior tech. Besides that Sony is currently working with developers to deliver the promised improved visuals and performance.
Sony has been a giant in the gaming scene since its inception of playstation. It seems that the company will continue to hold onto its firm ground with the release of PS5 Pro. The leaked specifications seem hopeful. The latest release will see huge improvements over the older version, enabling it to deliver better quality to the consumers. Especially the GPU performance leap will statiate the gamers with their wants of better fps at higher resolution. The PSSR technology is promised to deliver just that. It’s only a matter of time before Sony unveils its next gaming marvel.
